Using my network on LinkedIn, I reached out to a culture advocate at Hubspot, and had the opportunity to have a short discussion on the topic.
For her, "Culture means a way of life, with different characteristics of people. At HubSpot, our culture is driven by passion and our mission."
She says that Hubspot offers lots of employee resource groups to help them feel connected and that the culture team organizes great events.
I asked her what she thinks about culture in this remote work era and she says she actually thinks it's improving culture because companies are learning how to adjust and think more creatively.
She led me to Hubspot's blogs and articles where I found more information on how they have cultivated their culture.
Hubspot culture is driven by a shared passion for their mission and metrics. They say that their employees have HEART, meanign that they are: Humble, Empathetic, Adaptable, Remarkable and Transparent.
There is also an insightful list of Hubspot Culture Code Highlights which I have linked here.
Hubspot was actually named one of Fortune 100's Best Places to Work in 2019 and there are many reasons why.
Their company culture is fun and engaging and focuses on more than just workplace benefits.
They practice full internal transparency.
Hubspot operates under a team-first corporate culture in which they focus on team-bonding, cross-department collaboration, employee relationships and accountability. They also have a "No Door" policy in their offices, and what this does is essentially creates a spirit of collaboration, taking the focus away from hierarchy and status. In addition, all employees have full access to important company documents, which allows employees to be fully informed of the company's larger vision. Prioritizing transparency like this allows employees to obtain a sense of trust towards the company.
They have clearly defined core values, and they act on them.
Like mentioned before, Hubspot has an acronym for their values, HEART. These five values inform every decision they make and they make sure that all the actions they take are reflective of these values.
They encourage people's growth.
At Hubspot, they are aware that people seek companies that fits their personal work-life values and that people opt for opportunities that will allow them to grow.
They offer employees great learning and development opportunities and resources such as: HubTalks (an internal TEDTalk format speaking seires), Master Classes, a Free Books program, Tuition Reimbursement and Healthy @ Hubspot (wellness and fitness programs).
They practice flexibility.
Hubspot has a 5-Year Sabbatical which means that after working with them for 5 years, each employee gets access to a month-long sabbatical to do whatever they want, including travel or learning a new language.
They also offer unlimited vacation! This is again because Hubspot focuses more on results rather than the number of hours people put in. Employees are free to work whatever hours they want and take as much time off as they desire, as long as they are making a positive impact.
They have what is called the 'Use Good Judgement Policy"
Hubspot has no interest on micromanaging their employees or tracking their social media activity, sick day usage, round of drinks they bought at an event, etc. They focus on prioritizing their customers and their team and make decisions based on that.
Their culture is always a work in progress.
Hubspot leaves themselves the opportunity to grow and improve their culture and adjust and adapts it accordingly. They want to improve their culture the same way they want their individual employees to improve.
Hubspot also has lots of blogs and articles regarding remote work and company culture and it is really insightful.
